Shinshu Mars

Nestled at an altitude of 800 meters in the heart of the Japanese Alps near Nagano, Shinshu was founded in 1985 by Hombo Shuzo, a wine and shochu producer based on the island of Kuyshu.

Shinshu is the highest distillery in Japan and enjoys a cool climate in summer and snowy winters where temperatures are often negative. Built at the foot of Mount Komagatake, from which its single malt takes its name, the distillery is surrounded by pure water springs which it uses for the production of its whiskies.

Mothballed in 1992 due to a sluggish economy, the Shinshu distillery was revived in 2011, and presented new bottlings under the Mars Whisky brand in 2014 with the single malt Komagatake The Revival.

Since this resurrection, Shinshu continues to amaze with many whisky releases and produces a wide range from Komagatake single malts sometimes bottled as single cask and limited editions, to Cosmo and Kasei blends, through Mars Malting blended malts.

The whiskies produced at Shinshu are aged in brandy, bourbon, Japanese red wine and many other casks.
