Miyagikyo

It is in the Miyagi valley at the confluence of the Nikkawa and Hirose rivers that Masataka Taketsuru, founder of Nikka, decided to establish his second distillery after three years of intense research.

Founded in 1969, the Miyagikyo distillery is located in the northeast of Honshu Island in a hilly area covered with maple and coniferous forests. The volcanic soil filters the water from the naturally occurring springs which are known for their purity.

The distillery has traditional and column stills that produce both grain and malt whiskies. The distillery can therefore produce an eclectic range of whiskies from the famous Nikka Coffey Grain and Coffey Malt, to the Miyagikyo single malt.

Renowned for being whiskies full of sweetness, elegance and complexity, the distillery's single malts have been victims of their success and the 10, 12, 15 and 20 year old versions had to be stopped in 2015. Today only a non-aged version of the single malt is offered with each year limited editions matured in different types of casks.
