Unknown outside Japan, Fuji Sanroku which means "at the foot of Mount Fuji", is a great 18 year old single malt producted in Fuji Gotemba distillery owned by Kirin Group. Very surprising for the richness and depth of its fruity and woody aromas, Fuji Sanroku 18 year old is a whisky to be savored rather as a digestive. Its creamy texture will appeal to most demanding lovers of single malt and people willing to learn a new traditional know-how from Japan.

The distillery is producing a majority of grain whisky and a small quantity of malt whisky entering in the composition of the Kirin blended whiskies. Fuji Sanroku 18 year old is the only one single malt bottled as such by Kirin, which makes this single malt more rare and valuable.

The distillery Fuji

The Mount Fuji Distillery, founded in 1972 by the Kirin group in the city of Gotemba, is located, as its name suggests, at the foot of the famous Mount Fuji, one of the most well-known emblem of Japan. While the distillery has historical knowledge in grain whiskies, it produces a wide variety of Japanese whiskies that all pay homage to the Fujisan.

The distillery is located at 610 meters above sea level, in a natural environment. The distillery has springs where the pure water has been filtered through layers of volcanic rocks for decades. At this altitude, the climate is rather cool with an average temperature of 13°C, and the high humidity throughout the year is ideal for maturing the whiskies.

Our tasting experience of Kirin Fuji Sanroku 18 year old.

With an elegant golden color, Fuji Sanroku 18 years old gives off aromas of cereals, pineapple, young melon and some mineral notes. On the palate, its smooth texture reveals a nice complexity with cereals, strawberry, blackcurrant and orgeat syrup as the main aromas, all wrapped in a delicate smoky note. After tasting, its delicious aromatic bouquet gradually disappears leaving a slight bitterness.
